Dear Debi,
What can kids learn from watching the grass grow over time?
Debi's Tips

  • Kids learn observation skills and how to look past the obvious
  • By documenting what they’ve seen, kids learn about the transfer of knowledge
  • Since words are being used, kids are developing their literacy skills
  • And finally, kids gain an appreciation and respect for nature
And don’t forget about the great things that we learned this week:

Projects that unfold over time are important for our kids because they can observe firsthand the evolution of an activity day by day. A project as simple as growing grass can teach children so much about nature. Make sure to get your kids involved in every step of the activity.

First, pour the soil into a bin and have the kids help rake the soil with simple plastic gardening tools.

Next, have each child use a plastic measuring cup to scoop some of the grass seed or bird seed and place on top of the soil.

Next, have the kids use their hands to loosely add soil on top of the seeds.

Finally, let each kid water the grass growing bin. Place your project in a location where it’ll get enough sunlight.

In several days, you’ll find your bin will begin sprouting blades of grass. The next step in the grass growing project will be “Observation and Documentation.”

Now that the seeds are planted, it’s up to the kids to observe the progress and document it. Over the upcoming weeks, have them use magnifying glasses to see how the grass is growing, and ask them to write down or draw what they discover.
